“Winston Churchill: The Painter”

with Katherine Carter

Katherine Carter, Curator of Winston Churchill's country home at Chartwell, will present a talk exploring Churchill’s passion for painting, and his ability as an artist. Drawing on 12 years managing the world's largest collection of his work — and her role as an advisor for the Wallace Collection's upcoming retrospective, Winston Churchill: The Painter — Carter will chart the vital role that this pastime played in his life for almost half a century.

Churchill famously remarked "the muse of painting came to my rescue," and this talk will explain why. Carter will discuss his artistic origins, techniques, and the artist friends and mentors who influenced him. She will consider the historic significance of his paintings—including rarely-seen works that will feature in the Wallace Collection's highly anticipated exhibition—and, in doing so, reveal how art sustained one of the 20th century's most iconic statesmen
